Bike Rides & Events
These rides require, at minimum, an appropriate bike in good working order, water, and a helmet.
We suggest a spare tube, energy food, maybe a little cash in case you stop, and your biggest smile! Many rides are held subject to weather. It's a good idea to confirm dates, time and any specific requirements, too. We'll see you out there - and have fun!
Local Rides - The Napa valley has the best riding in the world. Listed here are some of our favorite bike routes. Each of these originates from St. Helena Cyclery, so please feel free to stop in to ask questions or say hi. We are here to make your ride more enjoyable.
Taste The Wine - What better way to check out our local wineries than on a bike through the Napa valley? We suggest either of these two options if you're looking for a nice twenty to twenty-five mile loop with access to some of the greatest wine on the planet and awesome scenery. You can ride south on Silverado trail to Yountville and back or go north on Silverado trail to Calistoga and back. Don't forget your panniers or a backpack, if you plan on take wine back. Need a bike? Don't forget to check our Bike Rental Page for more information!
South Loop
This ride rolls along the Silverado Trail to the town of Yountville where you'll cross over to a frontage road for Hwy 29 (Solano Ave.) You'll ride almost to Napa before turning west into the vineyards along Orchard Ave. Once you come to Dry Creek Rd. you'll head north and begin a gradual and quiet climb up to the top of Oakville Grade. You'll make sure your brakes are in good shape for the descent down Oakville grade (it's a steep one!) Stop at the bottom of the hill at the Oakville Grocery for refreshments and head back to the Silverado Trail and make your way back to St. Helena.
Mt. Veeder Loop
This ride is similar to the "South Loop" with an extra 6.81 miles and a challenging accent up the infamous Mt. Veeder. This is a well known route for all locals in the area giving you the perfect amount of climbing as well as a moderate amount of flat riding. This ride starts off the same as the south loop, only it stays straight on Solano Ave. then a right onto Trower Ave, followed by a left onto Dry Creek Rd; with one more right on Redwood Ave where you will begin your accent up Mt. Veeder. (If in need of any energy, water, or tubes before heading up the mountain - be sure to stop by Bicycle Works. Located at 3335 Solano Ave Napa, CA 94558 (Redwood Plaza). (707) 253-7000).
Once you have made it up and over the mountain you can expect a screaming steep descent down Oakville Grade, (Make sure those brake pads aren't worn before going on this ride, you'll be needing them for this one!). Cut across the 29 and onto Oakville Cross Rd to get back on the Silverado Trail making your way back up to St Helena.
Pope Valley Loop
Take Howell Mtn Road to Deer Park road. Cross Deer Park to White Cottage road and continue on to Chiles and Pope Valley road. Chiles and Pope Valley road will bring you back to Rt. 128 west. Follow Rt. 128 west to Silverado trail north and back to St. Helena. This route is approximately 40 miles and very hilly.
Calistoga Easy Loop
This is a rolling 30 mile ride up Silverado Trail and around Calistoga. This is a good ride to take in the country side and to take a break from the hills.
Franz Valley Loop
This loop follows the Easy Calistoga loop and up through Bennet Lane. You can access Franz Valley School Road either clockwise or counter clockwise.
This map leads you in a counter clockwise direction, up and over the Sonoma county line into Alexander Valley, then a left on Spencer. Continue making left hand turns all the way back to Hwy 128, taking a right towards Calistoga. Continue South past Calistoga on Hwy128/29 on the Hwy, which has a very wide shoulder until you get to either Larkmead Lane or Bale Lane - where I would recommend crossing back to the Silverado trail. (Careful crossing back over the hwy)
This extra loop on Franz Valley School road is mostly shaded and beautiful quiet riding. The roads are a little rough but a very nice ride. Great for a hot day, since you'll have shade for part of the ride. The Franz Valley School hill is a bit challenging but short, so everyone at every skill level should be able to make it without a problem.
